Our roads will soon welcome the arrival of the new Maruti A Star. It has been designed by Rajesh Kumar Gogu and Saurabh Singh of Maruti Suzuki India in conjunction with Suzuki of Japan. The five-door hatchback has been engineered by taking European trends and standards into consideration. In the words of Shinzo Nakanishi, the managing director of Suzuki Motor Corporation, the car will be produced from the company's Manesar facility in Haryana, by the end of October this year. The car will have an all-new Euro 5-compliant 1.0-litre aluminium petrol engine with CO2 emissions lower than those of European competitors. It has a bold design language with strong lines and large wheel arches. Clever packaging means a five-door model is on the cards, suggesting interior space will be good.

I expect the A-Star to slot in price-wise between the Swift and Wagon R, which pegs it at around 4-4.5 lakh. As to how it is compared to other cars in its segment, we're optimistic, but only time will tell!
